Analyze

The lettering above is display. All the letters are located between the cap line and baseline. There is no serif except maybe for the “I”. Indeed, the bottom of the letter can be considered as a serif. All the letters are caps. The counters, brackets, shoulders and joints are curved. There is no descenders and no ascenders. There is a ligature on both “T” of Mattel.

The overall look is curved. All the serifs are also very sharp. There is a good mix of large and thin stroke. The geometric proportions allow a good legibility for small sizes. Because of the tight kerning it appears that letters seem connected between each other.

Comment

It’s once again, a logotype. It reminds me the electronic computer card that all the engineers were proud to show to regular people. It was the really beginning of the microcomputing when the size the electronic components started to shrink.

It’s a logotype. There is no descender. There is one ascender on the “v”and one on the “t”. There is a mix of curved and sharped stem as we can see on the “n”, “e” and “t”. The kerning between all the letter are really close, except for the first “I” and the first “n”.

The letters evokes boldness. Because of the narrowness, the legibility is not easy for larger sizes. The “v’s” ascender marks a break in the logo and seems to lead to something farer. Maybe the typographer wanted to evoke a way to the future. Also the mix with the capital “I” and the”v’s” ascender marks an hyphenate between Intelli and vision.

Comment

This font is another good example of the early 80’s spirit. We are not in the 80’s yet but 1979. There is still the stamp of the disco movement. The brand Intellivision is a contraction of Intelligent and Television. It was the first faltering steps of microcomputing and games console.

The lettering is display. All letters are caps and there are no descenders or ascenders. The aperture of the “U’s” are very thick and curved, comparing to the thinness of the “S” and the sharpnessness of the “N”. There is no serif.

The legibility is good for large sizes. It’s divided in 2 words. The first word sub is far from the second hunt. One possible interpretation is that the “sub” word is following the “hunt” word. The opposite can be also possible. In that way, it’s more obvious thanks to the right stroke of the “T”.

Comment

Like the game title suggest, it’s about hunting submarine. The games designers of this period were more engineers than real games designers as we can define today. That’s why the font is simple and effective. The pale blue color of the letters reinforces the feeling of something big and calm like a submarine and a feeling of something very friendly.
